Spray-on oils: this year's sensation?
Will consumers look back five years from now and feel misty over the
burgeoning of spray-on oils in 2006-when flavored droplets found new
function beyond cooking sprays to play a greater role in meal
preparation? As substitutes for butter and margarine in the dairy
case and salad dressings in center store, spray-on oils may now be in
the early stages of widespread migration across many categories. read more

Beer drinkers favor large packs, bottles
To beer drinkers, size and shape matter. Larger package counts of 18
to 36, and longneck bottles, have buoyed the beer category in recent
years. Together they command case share, and lead an alcoholic
beverage business that lost its head to spirits and wines.
Once drinkers went to other alcohols-for taste, more upscale
appeal or less calories and carbs-brewers brought out packages to
encourage higher-volume purchases. read more

Will avian flu hurt holiday turkey sales?
A statistical sales analysis by ACNielsen suggests that while
increased concerns about avian flu seems to be having an impact on
poultry sales, the trends over the last three years could best be
described as "mixed" - the only segment where there seems to be
continued growth is in fresh turkey, which seems to be a little
bulletproof because so much of it is sold for the holidays.
For example, the equivalized unit volume for fresh meat chicken
reached $60.7 million for the 52 weeks ending in September 2006, down
4.5 percent compared to a year earlier, while fresh meat turkey
products had an equivalized unit volume of $70.2 million, up 11.7
percent from a year earlier - less than half the increase seen by the
segment in the past few years, but still the only significant
strength seen in the poultry category. read more

Latino health problems may grow center-store categories
Latinos who immigrate to the United States may escape problems in
their homeland or find new opportunities here-but at what price?
The longer Latinos live here and acculturate, the likelier they
are to adopt an American diet and lifestyle that produces rampant
obesity and diabetes. Not surprisingly, these conditions are surging
as health problems among the 41 million Latino populace here-to a
point where Type 2 diabetes is already 150 percent more prevalent
than among whites, says the American Diabetes Association. read more

With focus on scraping by, Americans forego life's little luxuries;
in a time of ''no spare cash'', focus on paying off debt and building
savings
Americans continue to rank near the very top when it comes to being
strapped for cash, according to a new ACNielsen study of consumers in
40 markets worldwide. Nearly one-quarter (22 percent) of U.S.
respondents said that once they have covered their basic living
expenses, they have no money left over. There is a bright spot: for
the first time since the study began in 2004, the U.S. has lost its
usual top spot among countries whose consumers have no cash to spare. read more

Probiotics 101: What you need to know about this hot new category
The term probiotic literally means "for life." Elie Metchnikoff, a
Russian physiologist and Nobel-prize winner is credited for inventing
probiotics and was the first to suggest (in 1907) that consuming
bacteria could have a beneficial effect.
His theory, based on the long life span and good health of the
Bulgarian people who regularly consumed yogurt, was that the
acid-producing organisms in fermented dairy products could prevent
what he called "fouling" in the large intestine - and as a result, if
consumed regularly, would lead to a longer and healthier life. read more

Ready-to-eat meals and meal-assembly solutions for busy shoppers
Ready-to-eat meals are getting increasingly popular among
time-constrained shoppers. Although many Americans may still enjoy
the process of preparing food for their families, the busy lifestyles
of today's consumer makes it more difficult. In a recent
SupermarketGuru.com quick poll, panelists were asked "Which things
discourage them most from cooking?" Fifty-eight percent said, "I
don't like the clean up", and 49% said, "I don't have time."
So what solutions do retailers have for consumers? Although
eating-out or grabbing fast food and take out may seem like the place
busy Americans turn to when looking for convenience, a recent
SupermarketGuru.com quick poll showed that more people prefer the
supermarket deli (41%) over restaurants (18%) and fast food (29%). read more

The 5 things YOU NEED TO KNOW about 2007
I am especially interested in the changes that will happen in 2007.
That's because businesses are about to perk up and understand that
all the technological inventions and human developments of the past
ten years must be implemented - and if not, those businesses leaders
will just have to go home and sulk about their lost customers and
profits.
It's an era with opportunities that go well beyond controlling
innovations, inventions, operations and technologies. read more
